Overview

The Hampta Pass Trek is one of the most sought after treks for trekkers who visit Himachal Pradesh. The reason behind this is the breathtaking beauty of nature and also because this trek is an easy to moderate level difficulty trek.

The best time to embark upon the Hampta Pass Trek is during the summer season from the months of May to August and October is the best time to visit this trek during the winter season. It is vital to listen to trek leaders carefully because it is a high pass trek with the maximum altitude being around 14,000 feet.

The nearest hill station to the Hampta Pass Trek is Manali, which also acts as the base camp for this trek. This trek is well known for its varying landscapes, spellbinding beauty, green open meadows, glacial valleys to name a few,

The first day of the Hampta Pass Trek begins with a drive from Manali to Jobra which is located at a distance of 17 Km from Manali and it takes about 2 hours to reach there. Jobra is already located at an high altitude of 9,800 feet so it is a good place to acclimatize to the trek.

Once we reach Jobra we will start walking towards Chika. It is a short trek of about 2 Km. and after walking for about an hour on this easy trail will take us to Chika and we will cross the 10,100 feet mark. The trail will take us through the dense forests of Maple, Deodar and Oak trees. The campsite for today at Chika is a vast green patch of land and makes a perfect camping spot.

Brief Overview of the Day

  • Driving Distance - 17 Km.
  • Driving Time - 2 Hours.
  • Trekking Distance - 2 Km.
  • Trekking Time - 1 Hour
  • Maximum Altitude - 10,100 ft.
  • Overnight stay at tents

Today we will leave from Chika towards Balu Ka Ghera which is going to be our campsite for tonight. We will start descending along the river on rough terrain filled with boulders. There might be a lot of stones on this path but it is an easy trail and you will be able to cover it without any problems.

As we keep walking you will spot the entire stretch of the trail covered with the beautiful Rhododendron trees. Soon we will reach a perfect spot from where you will be able to view the entire Dhauladgar range covered with snow right in front of you.

On our way to Balu Ka Ghera we will be crossing a picturesque valley called Jwara and from there we will have to cross the river and get on the other side. Beyond the mountains you see in front of you lies Hampta Pass which is our main destination.

The path at the end of the valley is a slope covered with rocks and snow and at the end of this trail we will reach Balu Ka Ghera.

Brief Overview of the Day

  • Trekking Distance - 9 Km.
  • Trekking Time - 6 Hours
  • Maximum Altitude - 11,900 ft.
  • Overnight stay at camps

Today is going to be a long day as we push towards the highest point on the trek at Hampta Pass which is around 14,000 ft. We will start climbing up along the river on a moderately ascending trek towards Hampta Pass.

Walking for about one and a half hours will take us to a plateau which is completely covered with snow during winters otherwise you will find patches of snow everywhere with Deo Tibet Peak right in front of you.

As we keep walking we will be crossing a second plateau and beyond that we will walk on a ridge. At the end of the first ridge starts a second ridge and after that is Hampta Pass. The climb from the second ridge up to Hampta Pass will take about 15 minutes but it is a steep, hard climb but it will be totally worth it once you see the beauty of nature unfold in front of your eyes at 14,000 ft. After spending some time there, we will start descending towards Siaguru.

Climbing down is harder than climbing up, the path is extremely steep and the best way to get down is by sliding or using ropes for support. After about one and a half hours, we will reach the base of the valley that will take us to Siagoru.

Brief Overview of the Day

  • Trekking Distance - 7 Km.
  • Trekking Time - 10 Hours
  • Maximum Altitude - 14,000 ft.
  • Night stay at camps.

Siagoru to Chatru is an easy downhill descent along the river which will take about 5 hours. There is no vegetation at this location because the weather is too hostile for any kind of life to thrive at this place.

Walking ahead the path gets a little trickier as you find yourself walking on the edges of mountains and ridges and watch out for slippery paths too. This is one of the reasons why this trek is preferred by adventure lovers.

Soon you will be able to spot Chandra river and we will start walking by its side and cross two glaciers beyond which lies our camping ground for today at Chatru.
